The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
