A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such medications should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
