During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
