From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of personalities, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, demons, and dark forces increasing in power within Dol-Makjar.
Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season lie ahead.
The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled
The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and introduced the premier party of characters who will separate from the central cast to embark on their own adventure, separate from the additional parties.
This warrior group includes Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), the cleric (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).
Dividing the Cast
Considering 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be impossible.
Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three distinct groups: Warriors, Planners, and Seekers.
The Nature of the Combat Party
As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed battle-oriented gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.
Upon first impression, figures such as the reluctant priest the cleric might appear unsuited, but the actions of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.
Why They Must Go
First, the team has a clear idea where to head next after a violent first encounter with the antagonists.
A former ally of the deceased character—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—manipulated the foes for his selfish purposes, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the rogue, and taking all the powerful objects to auction.
The antagonist then settled his liabilities and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, north of the city, with Cyd hot on his heels.
Individual Reasons
Secondly, each character has a specific drive to depart Dol-Makjar:
- Thimble, as the close ally and trusted friend, desires vengeance.
- Kattigan knows the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous environment.
- Tyranny and Wicander, having resisted his relatives’ demands to eliminate Teor and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
- However, their position as prominent individuals in House Halovar could help the team reach locations they normally couldn’t.
- Additionally, Teor swore a unbreakable promise to The savior for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.
Wanted and Hunted
Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that control the city for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind no longer safe:
- The agile adventurer and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
- Tyranny and The healer betrayed House Halovar and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
- The fighter is marked for death by the family.
This leaves them few options but to head to Timmony in pursuit of the antagonist.
What’s Next?
From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around next week, leaving the remaining eight players to form the Seekers and Strategists tables.
Viewers can anticipate finding out which characters will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
